Overview

The Youth Mural Program, located in Grant County, is a visually dynamic initiative that engages young people, teaching them about the history and culture of their community while providing artistic jewels throughout the area. It was conceived by Diana Ingalls Leyba and Faye McCalmont in 2002, with a vision to have local teens create community murals that connect them to their peers, local artists, and community members, adding meaning and beauty to their communities.

The program has been hugely successful, with over 85 murals created on the sides of buildings, the risers of high sidewalks, and long-blocked-in windows throughout Grant County and beyond. Murals extend as far as Glenwood, CP Anderson Vista, and the City of Rocks, with concentrations in Silver City, Santa Clara, Bayard, and Gila. Visitors and residents alike are awestruck by the caliber of work these young people produce.

Artistic and Cultural Impact

Young participants explore the cultural and historical past of the region, translating the information they learn into images for the murals. Each mural is facilitated by a lead artist and assistant artists, selected for their expertise, large format experience, unique style, and work with diverse populations. Western New Mexico University art students often play a supporting role and may become mentors themselves.

Students involved in the Youth Mural Program gain problem-solving skills and learn to work collaboratively while creating thoughtful and inspirational works of art. The program empowers them to reach their full potential while positively impacting their community. Participants report a strong sense of ownership and connection to the murals, which instills a deep sense of pride. Many students say the murals serve as beacons during challenging times in their lives, and they all view the works as enduring symbols for themselves and future generations.
